After its premiere on Good Friday in 1729, it was completely forgotten for a hundred years. Only in 1829 was it rediscovered and presented to the world by Felix Mendelssohn. This presented edition, a vocal score with piano reduction, is the sixteenth edition of the work. It has been expertly edited and accompanied by a short foreword by Alfred Dürr.
