The JP162 single French horn is designed for children with a 'small wrap,' making it smaller than a full-size horn. This design allows a child to put their right hand correctly into the bell while maintaining the proper posture for playing. The JP162 represents the F side, and its counterpart, the JP161, is the Bb side. Both horns read horn in F music and transpose a 5th.

There is ongoing debate among French horn teachers regarding which 'side' to start new pupils on—the 'Bb' or 'F' side. The Bb side is considered easier for pitching, but proficiency in both sides is necessary for horn players.
