Muzo: Akathist to the Mother of God – Complete Musical Score – 2nd Edition

A complete musical score of the Akathist to the Mother of God, one of the oldest and most beautiful Marian hymns of the Christian Eastern tradition. The Akathist is a liturgical hymn traditionally sung while standing.

The hymn most probably dates from the 5th–6th century, although its authorship remains unknown. Among the proposed authors are Romanos the Melodist, the deacon George of Pisidia, and Sergius, Patriarch of Constantinople.

The Akathist also had a significant influence on later Marian poetry throughout the Christian Church. The first Polish translation was made in 1792 by the Greek Catholic Basilian monk Father Tymoteusz Szczurowski OSBM. One of the best-known Polish translations was made by the Jesuit Father Mieczysław Bednarz in 1965.

This publication contains the complete score of all 24 stanzas – Ikoi and Kontakia – arranged for cantors and a three-part choir.
