Tomaszek Michał: The Affairs of the Monastery of Saint Gall. Ekkehard IV of Sankt-Gallen

Product description:

This is the story of the ups and downs of the monastery of Saint Gall, written by Ekkehard, an 11th-century monk. It has long been well-known to medieval Latin literature scholars and historians of monastic culture.

Thanks to its literary qualities and its rich anecdotal content, it enjoys high regard among experts. However, outside academic circles, Ekkehard's work remains largely unknown. Overcoming the barrier of Latin, this edition aims to change that.

The monastic history of Saint Gall is not a dry, annalistic record. Far from being hermetic or inaccessible, it is colorful, vivid, and offers insights into the lives and mindsets of medieval monks in a captivating manner—perhaps even more so than Umberto Eco's modern bestseller “The Name of the Rose.” Its key advantage? It was written by someone who truly belonged to that medieval world.
