Typically, compensated BBb basses have been cumbersome for the average-sized brass musician; their unwieldy size coupled with a bore size disproportionately small for their overall dimensions made them challenging to play comfortably and limited their potential.

Wessex Tubas’ BBb 5/4 Compensated Tuba ‘Excelsior’ draws inspiration from the great bass tubas of the past while incorporating truly innovative design principles to create a compensated tuba that is only marginally larger than a standard EEb tuba yet boasts a generously proportioned bore and a true 5/4 bell throat.
