Robert Sullivan was Yamaha’s primary consultant in designing the New York series. Sullivan is a distinguished trumpet player and educator. The project began while he was serving as the first assistant in The New York Philharmonic. Yamaha's collaboration with Robert coincided with the development of the Chicago models. The technical insights and experience gained from both projects allowed Yamaha to deepen its understanding of tone color, projection, intonation, and all the elements necessary for creating a truly expressive instrument.

The Yamaha Xeno Artist models were developed with input from leading orchestras worldwide – The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and The New York Philharmonic. Yamaha’s global technical team worked with many artists to uncover what they truly seek in a trumpet. After compiling their feedback, Yamaha selected John Hagstrom (CH) and Bob Sullivan (NY) as the representative players for these new models. CHICAGO trumpets offer a powerful and focused sound, while the NEW YORK models are known for their warm, expansive tone.
